Thinking of Becoming a Manager?
Why are you taking on the job of a manager or planning to apply for management roles?
Because you feel you're:
- Ready for more varied responsibility
- Interested in leading others
- Interested in training others
- You enjoy helping other people to succeed
- Your boss said you should be a manager
- You're really good at your own job but you won't get any more money no matter how good you are
- To make your family proud of you
- To buy a car
- For a feeling of power
How can you possibly know if you'll enjoy being a manager or if you'll be any good at it? How about taking a test drive? If you're thinking about applying for management jobs but haven't actually applied for or landed one yet, it may be a good idea to ask your own current managers if you can have a trial opportunity to manage an upcoming project or take on the development of a new employee. This option would give you experience of the manager's role for a short and limited time and in a protected situation.
You (and your bosses) may also feel comfortable with a short term arrangement because there's an end point. You (and your bosses) aren't making a huge (maybe risky) commitment. If you find you don't like it or it's not what you thought it would be or you like it but you feel you'd be best to wait a while, that's ok, that's good. You've given it a shot and you've gained information. If you loved it and your managers liked the job you did then you may be offered a management job with your current company or you're now confident about applying elsewhere.
