Nintendo GameCube: Limited But Functional

One company that's been a big name in video games for years is Nintendo. In many ways Nintendo revived interest in video game systems that can be hooked up to televisions (as opposed to video games played on home computers). It put out a number of good systems in the late eighties and throughout the nineties.

The Nintendo GameCube is the current iteration of this long line of video game platforms, but unfortunately it doesn't really measure up compared to other modern video game platforms like the new Sony PlayStation 3, and Microsoft's Xbox 360. For example the GameCube has a processor with a speed of 485 Megahertz while the PlayStation 3 has a central processor with a clock speed of 3.2 Gigahertz which controls eight other processors, and the Xbox 360 has three processors running at 3.2 Gigahertz each! The differences in memory are just as large with the GameCube having a system memory of 40 Megabytes, while the Xbox 360 has 512 Megabytes of RAM. One thing that might offset the GameCubes slow processor and small memory to some extent is the fact that the processor itself is a 128 bit unit.

The GameCube also lacks a hard drive which both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 feature. While apparent deficiencies in hardware can be made up for to some extent by the unique hardware architectures and software, the lack of a hard drive put the GameCube at a stark disadvantage because of the way being able to store various data allows the user of a video game platform to customize the video gaming experience. For example the Xbox 360 allows users to create their own sound tracks to go along with games and then store that music on the hard drive. Apparently with the GameCube, there isn't that option, so the user is stuck with whatever sound comes with the software.

The GameCube does have a decent amount of networking capability. Besides the ability to support four players on a single unit, the GamCube has an optional 56 Kbps modem adapter and a separate broadband adapter. The broadband adapter allows for playing over DSL and cable modems, with Local Area Network play an option on some game titles. It also has parallel and serial ports as well as two Digicard ports and one Type III PCMCIA expansion slot.

Another thing that puts the GameCube at a huge disadvantage when compared to the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is the fact that it's disk drive is designed for Nintendo's proprietary eight centimeter mini DVD. Each mini DVD only holds 1.5 Gigabytes of data which is severely limited compared to the Blu-ray drive that comes on the PS3 which can access discs holding 54 Gigabytes and the Xbox 360's optional HD-DVD drive which can access discs holding 30 Gigabytes worth of data.

The fact that the disk drive only takes the eight centimeter discs also means that the GameCube 360 is not a multifunctional platform the way the other systems are. The inability of this platform to play CD's DVD's and other media limits it to the realm of strictly being a video game platform while the PS3 and Xbox 360 are also CD and DVD players.

In all, while the Nintendo GameCube can't really compete with the other video gaming platforms on the market today, it seems to serve well as strictly a video gaming device.

Manhunt 2 to Be Banned in England for Extreme Violence

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has refused to classify the latest violent video game from Rockstar entertainment called "Manhunt 2" because of its "unremitting bleakness" and it's blatant use of "casual sadism." The BBFC feels that because of the overall bleak tone and the high degree of visceral killing without any remorseful element in the emotional makeup of it's main characters, that just asking Rockstar to delete some of its more violent scenes of bloodshed would not nearly be enough to allow the BBFC to even put an "Adults Only" tag onto the "Manhunt2" video game box.

Since no video game store in Britain can stock a video game on their shelves without a label that has been endorsed by the BBFC, store owners who do put the game up for sale can be put in jail for up to six months and face a fine of more than $10,000 dollars. Even importing the violent video game through an on line retail outlet is not allowed, as any import of the game can be snatched up by English customs at any moment.

AN UNPRECEDENTED ACTION
This marks the first time that a violent video game has been strictly prohibited by the British government in British history. "Carmeggedon", another video game that had been condemned for containing too much blood and gore was banned for a few months before the game's developer decided to cut some scenes out of the game that were deemed most reprehensible in nature, which allowed the BBFC to grant a "Mature" rating to the game so that it was able to be sold in all stores throughout the English community.

Rockstar is not taking the news well. It has issued a statement that it is totally against this kind of blatant censorship and it might appeal the ruling to a higher court. A Rockstar spokesman made the following public statement: "While we respect the authority of the classification board and will abide by the rules, we emphatically disagree with this particular decision. Manhunt 2 is an entertainment experience for fans of psychological thrillers and horror. The subject matter of this game is in line with other mainstream entertainment choices for adult consumers. The adult consumers who will play this game fully understand that it is fictional interactive entertainment and nothing more."

PAST HISTORY OF VIOLENT VIDEO GAME TROUBLES FOR THE ORIGINAL "MANHUNT"
In July of 2004, a teenager named Warren LeBlanc met his friend, Stefan Pakeerah, aged 14, to a secluded area behind a small convenience store in Leicester, England. He then pulled out a claw hammer from a bag he was carrying and plunged it into the skull of his friends three times until he died a bloody and horrible death.

When the police found out that the culprit of this violent act had been a huge fan of the original PS2 version of "Manhunt", the British media swarmed on the implications that this new-found evidence had on the murder case itself. Because of the fact that a claw hammer is one of the main weapons used in the violent video game "Manhunt", Stefan's father added fuel to the fire by stating that his son was killed in the exact manner that the main character in "Manhunt" used to track down and kill his enemies as well.

"Everything went black. I didn't intend to kill him at first, but when I saw the blood I just let go and hit more times," that is the statement Warren LeBlanc allegedly said upon his arrest at the time back in 2004. Since the BBFC actually allowed the original "Manhunt" to receive an "18" rating, perhaps this is why they are now so adamant about not allowing "Manhunt2" to be allowed to be sold in stores at all, which will allow them to escape any wrath brought on by activist groups who could accuse them of allowing another heinous murder to take place on English soil.

A VIOLENT MIND WILL RESULT IN VIOLENT BEHAVIOR
The controversy behind video game violence seems to be never ending. Because of all of the various violent watchdog groups out there who are ready to jump down the throats of any video game developer who just wants to entertain people by making exciting and graphic games such as "Grand Theft Auto 4" and "Doom", violent video games will always be the center of unwanted bad press.

Most pragmatic researchers of video game violence see no certain parallel between playing a violent video game and then going out into the real world and bashing someone over the head with a hammer, even though that one case in England is a definite exception to this rule. If we are going to continue living in a free society, then we should all be allowed to judge for ourselves exactly what type of video game or violent movie we want to watch as long as our civilization continues to exist freely.

Nintendo Wii Fit - What a Blast

Wii Fit must be connected to a Wii console for it to work and must make you fitter than you were before since 'Fit' is in its name. Makes sense, doesn't it.

Released in May 2008 to mostly positive reviews, today this beauty is the biggest selling console anywhere. Nintendo's latest innovation for the gaming console gets the gamer off the couch and, who knows, could make this the end of the plump, lazy gamer.

Wii fit is a game using the incredible Balance Board, designed for this game, which concentrates on helping players keep fit. It tracks your balance, and after completing a move it shows you in dramatic fashion how your centre of gravity is moving. While the overall focus may appear to be on core muscles, the Strength Training exercises do contain some arm and leg exercises, such as Push-Ups, Side Plank Combo, and Basic Lunges.

Scoring is generated by accurate repetitions, which are recorded by the Balance Board, or in some cases the Wii Remote such as for Triceps Extensions. On a daily basis, the time spent exercising is deposited into the system's bank, and as credits are deposited, new activities and difficulties are unlocked, rewarding the user for continuing to use the Wii Fit.

Someone told me recently that his doctor is recommending Wii Fit to him as it's much less boring than exercise! Wow, this phenomenon really is going places. By the way, before anyone says you can do all these things without this console, there is remember, the added benefit of having the game track your weight and progress, help your form and timing with each exercise, and pair the strength exercises with yoga exercises in ways that make sense. The programmes are actually in some form of order for your ease of use and for your encouragement to continue.

The Wii Fit is just so much fun and all the time you're excercising that body without really much effort. If you've got one - great, if you're thinking of getting one you will certainly not be disappointed.

Basic Overview of Human Area Networking Technology

Human society is entering an era of ubiquitous computing, when networks are seamlessly interconnected and information is always accessible at our fingertips. The practical implementation of ubiquitous services requires three levels of connectivity: Wide Area Networks (WAN), typically via the Internet, to remotely connect all types of severs and terminals; Local Area Networks (LAN), typically via Ethernet or WiFi connectivity among all the information and communication appliances in offices and homes; and Human Area Networks (HAN) for connectivity to personal information, media and communication appliances within the much smaller sphere of ordinary daily activities the last one meter.

What is RedTacton?
RedTacton is a new Human Area Networking technology that uses the surface of the human body as a safe, high speed network transmission path!!RedTacton is a break-through technology that, for the first time, enables reliable high-speed HAN. In the past, Bluetooth, infrared communications (IrDA), radio frequency ID systems (RFID), and other technologies have been proposed to solve the "last meter" connectivity problem. However, they each have various fundamental technical limitations that constrain their usage, such as the precipitous fall-off in transmission speed in multi-user environments producing network congestion.

1. RedTacton uses the minute electric field emitted on the surface of the human body. Technically, it is completely distinct from wireless and infrared.
2. A transmission path is formed at the moment a part of the human body comes in contact with a RedTacton transceiver. Physically separating ends the contact and thus ends communication.
3. Using RedTacton, communication starts when terminals carried by the user or embedded in devices are linked in various combinations according to the user's natural, physical movements.
4. Communication is possible using any body surfaces, such as the hands, fingers, arms, feet, face, legs or torso. RedTacton works through shoes and clothing as well.

Basic Principle
RedTacton takes a different technical approach. Instead of relying on electromagnetic waves or light waves to carry data, RedTacton uses weak electric fields on the surface of the body as a transmission medium.
1. The RedTacton transmitter induces a weak electric field on the surface of the body.
2. The RedTacton receiver senses changes in the weak electric field on the surface of the body caused by the transmitter.
3. RedTacton relies upon the principle that the optical properties of an electro-optic crystal can vary according to the changes of a weak electric field.
4. RedTacton detects changes in the optical properties of an electro-optic crystal using a laser and converts the result to an electrical signal in an optical receiver circuit.

The three major functional features of RedTacton are highlighted below.
1. A communications path can be created with a simple touch, automatically initiating the flow of data between a body-centric electronic device and a computer that is embedded in the environment. For example, two people equipped with RedTacton devices could exchange data just by shaking hands. A wide range of natural human actions -- grasping, sitting down, walking, or standing in a particular place -- can be used to trigger RedTacton to start a networked process.
2. Using a RedTacton electro-optic sensor, two-way communication is supported between any two points on the body at a throughput of up to 10 Mbps. Communication is not just confined to the surface of the body, but can travel through the user's clothing to a RedTacton device in a pocket or through shoes to communicate with a RedTacton device embedded in the floor. Unlike wireless technologies, the transmission speed does not deteriorate even in the presence of large crowds of people all communicating at the same time in meeting rooms, auditoriums or stores. Because the body surface is the transmission path, increasing the number of connected users directly increases the available number of individual communication channels.
3. RedTacton can utilize a wide range of materials as a transmission medium, as long as the material is conductive and dielectric, which includes water and other liquids, various metals, certain plastics, glass, etc. Using ordinary structures such as tables and walls that are familiar and readily available, one could easily construct a seamless communication environment at very low cost using RedTacton. (Note that constraints are imposed by the length and environment of the propagating conductor, and by the thickness of the dielectric.)

Mechanism of communication with RedTacton
The transmitter sends data by inducing fluctuations in the minute electric field on the surface of the human body. Data is received using a photonic electric field sensor that combines an electro-optic crystal and a laser light to detect fluctuations in the minute electric field.

The naturally occurring electric field induced on the surface of the human body dissipates into the earth. Therefore, this electric field is exceptionally faint and unstable. The photonic electric field sensor developed by NTT enables weak electric fields to be measured by detecting changes in the optical properties of an electro-optic crystal with a laser beam.

Features

RedTacton has three main functional features.
(1) Touch: Touching, gripping, sitting, walking, stepping and other human movements can be the triggers for unlocking or locking, starting or stopping equipment, or obtaining data.
(2) Broadband & Interactive: Bandwidth does not deteriorate even with duplex operations and simultaneous access by many users! Duplex, interactive communication is possible at a maximum speed of 10Mbps. Because the transmission path is on the surface of the body, transmission speed does not deteriorate in congested areas where many people are communicating at the same time.
(3) Any media: In addition to the human body, various conductors and dielectrics can be used as transmission media. Conductors and dielectrics may also be used in combination.
