What Makes the Nintendo Wii Rock?

I'm sure there must be tons of people out there who own a Nintendo Wii. I myself own one and have thoroughly enjoyed it over the past few months. Nintendo has been extremely successful in marketing this gaming console to a very niche market which the playstations and the xboxes could not reach out to. So the credit definitely goes to the product planning department at Nintendo. But what about the technology behind this awesome gadget which makes it the most popular gaming console in recent times?

The technology behind the success of the Nintendo Wii definitely lies in its controller. It is simple, easy to hold and maneuver - and most of all, doesn't have those insane number of buttons to push just to kick your opponent's face. Yes it is graphically inferior to the PS3 and the Xbox but that's exactly what it is supposed to be - simple and fun!

Wii Remote

Like I mentioned above, this is definitely the piece which makes the Nintendo Wii so unique. The Wii Remote essentially comprises of a 3D MEMS sensor which is used to communicate with the console to provide information regarding the position and acceleration of the Wii Remote. A lot of effort was put in to move away from traditional 2D MEMS sensors to a 3D MEMS sensor and make it cheap and lightweight. The innovation started right at the wafer level according to the product manager at Analog Electronics.

Bluetooth

Yes, in case you didn't know the Wii Remote communicated with the console using bluetooth. Information such as the position, acceleration and what buttons are being pressed is transmitted via bluetooth to the Nintendo Wii's controller. Considering the fact that the distance between the user and the console is typically less than a couple of meters, bluetooth is the best cost effective option for this communication between the Wii Remote and the Wii Console.

Nunchuck

Non Wii users might not be familiar with this word. The nunchuck is basically a second controller and compliments the Wii Remote. It has to be plugged in to the Wii Remote and does not work as a standalone. It has its own accelerometer and features and analog joystick and two buttons. What is its pupose? Well when you're playing boxing you need two hands right? So you hold the Wii Remote in one hand and the Nunchuck in the other. Simply brilliant!

Infrared Bar

Ah yes, this is the bar that you position on top or bottom of your TV. Contrary to popular belief, this bar does not have any kind of sensors and all it does is emit infrared waves. The infrared receivers on the Wii Remote receive this and transmit the position of the Wii Remote relative to the TV screen back to the console. Basically the distance and angle is calculated and triangulated which is conveyed back to the console. As simple as that.

WiFi

Last but not least, we look at the WiFi system enabled on the Wii Console. Well this was added mainly for the purpose of multi player compatibility but you could also play some flash games on certain webservers using the WiFi in the Nintendo Wii. Lately there have also been a wave of Nintendo Wii WiFi routers been launched in the market.

There you go, that's what makes a Nintendo Wii rock! Time for my bowling game - in my living room... tata!

Starting A Business In Second Life

Starting a Business in Second Life

The virtual world of Second Life is a friendly place for businesses, as it offers most of the advantages of our real lives when youre about to start one. But, just as in real life, the competition is stiff and only the strong survive. Usually, people start out a business in Second Life with one of the following three purposes, that well discuss over the course of this article: for profit, for advertising or for creating a real life business. Lets talk a bit about each of these options.

Starting a Profit Business in Second Life

As you probably already know, Second Life uses a currency called the Linden Dollar, with 270 such Linden Dollars being equivalent to a US Dollar. Linden Dollars can be freely exchanged using the in-world currency exchange programs, or using a third party one. The point is, you can actually make money in Second Life, then translate that money into real life cash.

If you aim on starting a business for profit in Second Life, you will want to find a niche market that people need in-world. It doesnt really matter if car parts is a good niche in real life, in Second Life it will be useless. If cotton candy is what everyone in the virtual world needs, then thats your niche. The point is that you shouldnt base your profit-generating business on what could work in the physical world. If you manage to make a name for yourself and sell your stuff, youre bound to make a profit you can cash in on.

Starting a Business in Second Life for Advertising Purposes

Dont worry, this is not something new, its not something I just came up with. Advertising through a virtual Second Life company is what many of the real companies do. Basically, if you already have a business in real life, you can create a dummy of it in Second Life and promote it to the people in the game, which could be tomorrows real customers. And of course, theres a big psychological advantage when someone that has seen your business name in-game will see it in real life: Oh look, I know that store from Second Life, lets go buy from them.

Starting a Real Business through a Virtual Second Life One
Last but not least, some businesses in Second Life will have an inverse development as the above advertising ones. In this case, we assume you dont have any real company or business, but you want to create one in the future. Second Life is a good way to create a basis for it to land on when youll have the money or room to make it happen. Some pre-advertising will help a lot, but make sure youre consistent in following your business traits in game, to the real life one.

In conclusion, I must state that you wont need a lot of technical or law-related knowledge to start a business in Second Life, which will most likely differ if you want to start one for real. So although Second Life businesses are a good way to practice or advertise, they dont resemble real businesses in all aspects, especially the uncomfortable ones. Think about it, your Second Life business goes bankrupt, so what? But what if your real business goes bankrupt? You cant simply get a new avatar and start over.

Want to make real money with Second Life? You can make a fortune playing second life. Even quit your 'real' job.

Halo 3 Strategies

Halo 3 strategies. You need them. After a few games online, the normal (i.e. non-retarded) player realizes he can't just run around and chase people. This isn't Call of Duty. Halo requires intelligence. Intelligence means strategy.

A successful strategy decides where the majority of battles take place. It forces fights to occur where you want them to. It does not allow battles to regularly happen outside of comfort zones. It does not cover the entire map, either. Essentially, it downsizes the map to half or a quarter. By covering the whole map, your team will be stretched thin, and it becomes to tough to protect and help your teammates. That only leads to disaster.

Successful Halo 3 strategies do not rely on possessing all of the power weapons, because at that point, a strategy isn't really necessary. Your team could just run around with the power weapons and still win. A good strategy is easy to fall into. Finally, a successful strategy is flexible enough to allow for a few deaths without being rendered useless. It does not rely upon each player playing incredibly good.

Once you find a strategy that works, keep it. However, don't worry if your tactics are not impregnable. All the great strategies are, but the other team is very limited in its choices. Also, the strategy is not the dogma of a map. There will be times when, because you've fallen behind, posting up with the strategy will not work as the other team can just hang back. In these cases, disregard the strategy, and form a coordinated attack by rushing and flanking.

As the teams become better, the more complexities are added to the map, simultaneously altering a strategy, if only slightly. For example, if a team has a very skilled sniper, you and your teammates cannot stay in the open for long. You'll be forced to play more conservatively. Just feel comfortable in doing so. Another thing to consider is game variants. The map will obviously play different if the start weapon is BR's instead of assault rifles. And MLG rules totally change the map. Keep this is in mind before applying a strategy. Finally, you need to ask yourself: Is it adaptable? Does it require outrageous skill? Does it make the enemies play at my tempo? These are all important. To see a list of my own Halo 3 strategies, go here
