Shigeru Miyamoto: The Father of Modern Video Gaming

The Nintendo brand name meant nothing only 25 years ago. A long time toy and trading card maker in Japan, Nintendo wanted more than anything to find success in America in the video game arcade industry that they saw as so lucrative. After a first time flop they turned to the young and talented Shigeru Miyamoto to craft for them a game that could compete in a crowded quarter pushing market place in the States. His answer was Donkey Kong, and from there on he was Nintendos Golden Touch.

Shigeru Miyamoto was born on November 16, 1952 and raised outside of Kyoto, Japan in a rural setting devoid of the touches of modernity we see around us everywhere. He had no television or popular culture and was left to view the world as he imagined it. The imagination of a genius was born and thankfully proved to be a perfect fit with the gaming industry 30 years later. As a child he found his natural surroundings a wonder to explore, with stories of caves discovered and streambeds forded as a child. One can only imagine the adventures he had that ended up in games weve all played a hundred times through.

After attending the Kanezawa College of Art in 1970 he found work at Nintendo of Japan in 1977 through a friend of his father as a production artist in a company that had no need for one. When Nintendo of Americas first foray into video gaming failed in 1980 with Radarscope, they had an abundance of leftover cabinets and needed a game that could help them make up lost revenue. They turned to the only man around who was available, Miyamoto and asked for a game that would sell.

Miyamoto had no idea how to program a game; his education was in the arts, so he talked with the engineers and programmers and composed the music himself on a personal keyboard for Nintendos first massive success, Donkey Kong. The game was immediately a success and spawned the development of Miyamotos favorite work partner, having appeared in dozens of games now, Mario.

Miyamoto went on to develop all of the main sequence Mario games, his name appearing in the producer credit in almost every one except the Mario Land games for the gameboy, and eventually created The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, and more. His name is synonymous with quality. Nintendo is infamous for delaying its games, and its usually because of Miyamotos willingness to start the entire process from scratch if he thinks a game is being poorly made. He doesnt accept poor work, and if his resume is any indication, it appeals to the gamers of the world merely with his name on the cover. Hes been recognized the world over as one of the fathers of video games and one of the most influential people in modern pop culture. Numerous awards have been bestowed upon him and he continues to remain in the humble position as imaginer and developer of new projects and ideas for Nintendo.

America's Heroes

What has happened to America's heroes? The men and women who risked death and grievous bodily harm to save the world from villains, aliens, and ourselves. The bullet proof , flying, transparent, superhuman heroes who had family values and served mankind for the sake of mankind were idolized by American youths. These super-heroes righted wrongs, saved lives, and defended democracy.

We used to invite these heroes into our living rooms every afternoon and on Saturday mornings. We imitated the characters from television shows and begged mom and dad to buy us lunch-boxes with our favorite super-hero's picture on the front of them. When Halloween came around, we wore our favorite heroes costumes as we begged for candy on beggars night. What was the harm in mimicking our favorite super-hero then?

Today's heroes are vastly different than the heroes I knew when I was growing up. People like Britney Spears (pop star) and Mike Tyson (boxer) not only set bad examples for youth today, but they destroy the concept of what a hero should be. This generation of youths know only of heroes that are frequently arrested for being involved in drugs and other criminal behaviors. What is the harm in mimicking today's so-called heroes?

Yesterdays heroes were often mimicked by children. Pretending to be their favorite super-hero characters, children would rescue imaginary victims from fires, accidents, and kidnappings. Kids today imitate their generations heroes by strutting around half naked and engaging in drug and alcohol abuse.

The only true heroes left in American society today are those brave men and women still serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those who put their very lives at risk everyday while still maintaining the beliefs and morals of our democratic society, deserve to be called America's heroes.

What has happened to America's heroes? Heroes have changed a lot since the days of Batman and Superman, but they still exist today in the American armed forces. They no longer wear brightly colored costumes and masks. America's heroes, now wear camouflage uniforms and carry rifles in foreign lands. Today's heroes are not bullet proof and immortal, but they are truly heroes.

What About Nintendo Wii??

Nintendo Wii Active Gaming The Nintendo Wii is a revolutionary gaming system that allows you to really feel like you are doing the games you are playing. Right out of the box it is ready for you to enjoy.

With Wii Sports you can play five sports right in your home and feel almost like you are playing for real. You can take the court with tennis, hit the lanes in bowling, take the field in baseball, visit the green in golf, and step into the ring in boxing. Besides Wii Sports there several other sports games have been released for the Nintendo Wii that use the revolutionary capabilities of the Wii to create an active video game experience. Just a two examples are Showtime Championship Boxing and Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games. Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games is among the more interesting somewhat active games considering it has several different games to play and can be fun as a multiplayer game. The games are not always very active, but it does have some good active games including rowing and the swimming events.

There are also several other Nintendo Wii games out there that are active, although, you have to be selective as some are just regular video games that do not use the active capabilities of the Wii. One of the best active games that has been released is Wii Fit. This game is an interactive exercise video game. The closest thing it can be compared to is an exercise video, but it is much more than just that. It further makes the Nintendo Wii revolutionary through the addition of the Wii balance board, which gives the added functionality that allows you to do the included exercises and activities as an interactive video gaming experience with the Nintendo Wii.

To some of the more hardcore gamers the Wii Fit may seem too explicitly like exercising to be enjoyable as a video game. There are still other fun active gaming options, such as the snow skiing game called We Ski, which uses the balance board as skis and the Wii remote and nunchuck as ski poles.

Another good active game for the Nintendo Wii is Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party. This game is available for several gaming systems, but the Wii version makes the game more active than the others. Beyond giving your legs a workout with the dance pad the Wii version adds hand gestures by using the motion sensing technology of the Wii remote and nunchuck. This makes it a fun dancing video game that is active gaming for the whole body.

Another option for more active Nintendo Wii video gaming is Rock Band, especially if you play the drums. There are several other more interesting games that involve doing arm movements including Rayman Raving Rabbids. This is one of the more traditional video game like games that ends up involving a good amount of arm movement mostly involving you shaking the Wii remote and nunchuck up and down.

Warning - You Have Been DataMined!

It affects hundreds of millions of us each day while we are blissfully unaware.

Today's high-tech world is drowning in data but is starved for knowledge. Data mining is the search for significant patterns and trends. It's also been called the poor stepchild to statistcial analysis.

To give you an example you go to your local supermarket to buy food and you use your store card for discounts and fast checkout. It give the store a record of how often you shop, what foods you like and at what prices in this case it's a win-win situation. This continues thoughout your day as you bank go to the mall, gas station, and so on.

However information is increasingly collected without your knowledge or consent. "Black Boxes" the size of cigarette packs have been installed in 40 million vehicles to monitor speed, seat belt use, and more. Only 5 states at the present time require that the buyer be made aware of this fact.

The trade-off is somone has a record of when and where you drive, what you eat, what over the counter medications you buy, whether you smoke or not, where you fly and with whom, what you like to read and watch and spend money on.

Any one item is not invasive but when birth certificates, credit histories, real estate deeds, military records, and insurance claims are pulled together it paints a very intimate picture. Add to the mix that the average person is seen by surveillence cameras 75X a day.

In the past decade an explosion of technology has taken place and the insatiable appetite of marketers for information about consumers has made data collection less voulutary and more worrisome.

Data mining is big business. Companies vacuum up data from public and private records, aggragate it analyze it and sell it to buyers ranging from private companies to the CIA. If an error exists there is no knowledge on your part thus it can't be fixed.

Data thefts are on the rise included are banks, credit card companies, and the biggest of the data brokers Choicepoint.
When their records were breach they left millions of people vunerable to identity theft.

In closing technology is here to stay and we love convience but we must be aware and remain vigilant. Also it's time for Congress to step up and do their job to create a basic bill of rights for all information. This will provide us with much needed protection.
