Still The Greatest Band On The Planet - Queen - A Personal Tribute
"QUEEN" were undoubtedly the greatest rock band on the planet. All members of the band wrote songs and all took lead vocals on various album tracks, apart from John Deacon,(the quiet one), but it was Freddie Mercury, who simply oozed charisma even from early on. You knew he was special! As soon as you saw them perform "Killer Queen" on "Top of the pops" (a British institution for many on TV). When you saw the "bling" and the big fur coat and the sheer elegance and style of the man then you knew they were going to be really special! and become one if not the biggest band in Britain.
Roger Taylor, Brian may, John Deacon and the greatest entertainer even up until his untimely death from HIV Freddie mercury. My first memory of queen was their performance off "killer queen" on "top of the pops" way back in the late seventies. That was me hooked onto the Queen sound and throughout the years they became a big part of my life. They were the only band to hold my attention completely through the years and even come close to my main interest, football and Glasgow rangers. I was lucky enough to see Queen live twice at the Glasgow Apollo and at Knebworth. Both concerts were breathtaking but it was Mercury's performance, his vocal range and showmanship that captivated me. Even now when I put on a DVD such as the Wembley or Milton Keynes live concerts, I still get goosebumps when he sings, such was the impact Queen and their songs had on me. Indeed if you were to ask my mum what she remembered about me being young the most, I am sure she would say that it was the sound of Queen bursting through my bedroom walls especially "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the: "mama just killed a man, put a gun against his head pulled the trigger now hes dead mama ooh ooh ooh ooh!", and you know how most mums will come in and shout "put the noise down", she didn't because she had heard it so much she started singing it as well when she brought me in a cup of tea! You see that was the thing about Queen, they affected everyone that heard their sound . It was rock, it was pop, it was soul, it was melodic and it was just the richness off the Queen sound that was so different.
There was no one like them and there wont ever be because there will never be another Freddie not in this lifetime or the next one or the one after that. A singer off songs he was but he was not just a singer he was the full package a true showbiz legend in every sense of the word. The greatest singer of all time alongside the greatest band off all time, that is Queen!
